So far, we're doing 90 minutes of speech...2 30 minute individual and a single group session. Anyone getting more is my hero and role model! Congrats and have a terrific summer.
We met Mason's first grade teacher yesterday...she seems very nice and excited to work with Mason next year...had lots of ideas to share with us and went into a lot of detail of how she likes to run her class...I'm very optimistic...I actually went to highschool with this girl...she was a year younger than me and we never talked, but I thought it was nice to at least see a familiar face! They upped his speech from 70 min a week to 100 min a week, which is funny because when Mason first started they claimed that the max a child could receive through them was 60 min...now they have added even more...I didn't remind them that they told me that once upon a time and I'm definitely not complaining, he needs as much as he can get...they kept the OT the same but it is now just sensory related...most of his fine motor skills are at age level!! I was so happy to hear that, in fact on one of the tests, can't remember what it was called, but they make him copy shapes etc, he scored almost a year ahead of his age...I was so excited!!! That is the first time on any test that Mason scored above age level!!
In WI where I live we have a kindergarten center where all the kids go for kindergarten and then they branch out into their district school beginning in first grade...I'm a little nervous starting all over with a new school again...we are familiar with the school because of our older sons' but not very familiar with the special ed portion...but like I said things seemed to go well...although I did think the same thing last year and it all fell apart by Oct and we were redoing the IEP and had to set up monthly meetings with the teacher and director of special needs because the school wasn't following through with a lot of the stuff on the IEP...they thought they could pick and choose what they thought was important to work on...after several attempts of trying to talk to the teacher about it, we finally had to go to the director...Mason's teacher kept saying things like "well I just thought we should focus on this right now instead of this" etc, and I told her that wasn't her decision to decide what was more important...but after the director stepped in things did get better.
So anyway, I am nervous, but I guess that comes with the territory, huh...I probably wouldn't be a good Mom if I wasn't nervous, I just can't let it get the best of me!! Niki That sounds great
Sounds excellent!
Remember...sometimes they say that they only offer something, but they leave off the caveat...,"we are only offering you this." I was told that the maximum number of days a child could be in the summer program per week was three...until I went to the Special Ed Coordinator for the town and got five.
Sounds good! My son is also going into 1st grade at a Wisconsin school. He receives 90 minutes of speech and 60 minutes of social skills training. OT is also just for sensory issues. Hmmm - I wonder why they said the max for speech was 60 minutes?LUCKY:) We got 30 min. max here in Texas for speech:)
It is nice you know your sons teacher..she will no doubt be an excellent one and hopefully you will get tons of back and forth communication from her..
THE teacher makes the biggest difference in your child's success and it looks like he is getting off to a great start!! Congrats!!
It sounds great. Adam was never in speech at school when he was younger, but my middle son was in speech from k-5 and was just released last month. He is in 3rd grade. He alway got 1.5 hours or more per week.
I am in WI also. It is nice to see some people from WI. There haven't been many.
Sounds VERY good. I just got T's final IEP, and it compares quite favorably to many here!
She got: 5 hr per week Language Arts SPED; 5 hr week math SPED; 1 hr per week Social Skills (these are all the SPED teacher's domain).
TWO HOURS per week Speech (And I LOVE the SLP!); and 30 min per week OT, the OT will mostly act in a consulting mode to the classroom teacher.
And I was already very pleased with the goals, of course.
She is gonna be one busy girl!
